UGANDA:Govt sticks to sim-card verification deadline, gives reprieve for mobile money accounts
At midnight on Friday, government will switch off over 1.5 million sim-cards that have not yet been verified against their owners national identity cards.
The minister for Information Frank Tumwebaze told a news conference on Friday afternoon that the move is intended to strengthen national security.
92% of the current registered simcards account for 17.6 million lines in a market of 22 million cards, which puts at least five million users at the risk of being shut off after the May 19th deadline expires.
