Tigo to shut down money transfer service

TIGO Tanzania plans to temporarily shut down its Tigo Pesa money transfer service this coming weekend for about 17 hours to test the upgraded system of the service.

A statement issued to the press by the telecom in Dar es Salaam yesterday stated that the service would be switched off on Saturday night to Sunday afternoon. It will be a culmination of a seven days exercise of upgrading the mobile financial service platform.

The Tigo Pesa services which will be affected during the maintenance period include PIN changing and registration of new subscribers and Sim modification that will be unavailable for a week until September 16.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused while we strive to make your Tigo Pesa experience and performance much faster, stable and more flexible,” read the statement in part. A similar announcement has also been published by the telecom across the local dailies and on social media.

Tigo is among mobile telecom operator offering mobile financial service in Tanzania. It has over 4 million customers across the country. Last year Tigo Pesa cross border and launched the money transfer services to Rwanda with currency conversion and also paid a quarterly profit share to its subscriber.
