Smart telecom joins East Africa’s mobile banking
Smart Telecom last week launched its mobile money service SMART PESA on to the Uganda market making it the latest telecom company to join East Africa growing mobile banking sector.
“Smart is one of the most innovative telecom companies in the market today. Just as we created a revolution in the data bundle market by providing cheap and reliable data bundles in the country which positioned us as the leading providers of cheap data bundles in the country today, SMART PESA seeks to create a revolution in Uganda’s mobile money market,” said Abdellatif Bouziani the Smart Group, CEO.
Bouziani was speaking at the launch of SMART PESA that took place at the companies head offices in Kampala.
He said Smart is known for doing and providing very unique services and products to her customers and that the company is proud to add SMART PESA into its unique product portfolio. “SMART PESA will go a long way in enabling financial inclusion in Uganda,” Bouziani said.
“When we launched our operation in Uganda two years ago, people thought we would not last three month but here we, two years down the road and we are still growing. Smart Telecom Uganda has been growing in triple digits each year for the last two years we have been on market,” Bouziani noted.
For the meantime, SMART PESA introduced its initial offer which enables customers to send money to the maximum Ush4,000,000 across any local network at only Ush100.
With SMART PESA, customers will be able to send and receive money, deposit and withdraw cash, and make bulk payments such as salary disbursements. In addition, customers will in the future be able to access micro credit and micro savings accounts in SMART PESA.

Smarts’ mobile financial services will serve as a crucial product in achieving this aforementioned aim. Bouziani said financial inclusion is very important, not only for Smart Telecom customers but to all Ugandans. He said from being able to send and receive money from family and friends, top up airtime, pay bills, SMART PESA will support people’s daily needs with robust systems that offer unparalleled reliability of service. He said SMART PESA is now available in all countries that company operates in across East Africa that is; Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania.
