KENYA:No ban on M-Pesa school fees payments

Education CS Fred Matiang'i did not ban the payment for school fees via M-Pesa, PS Belio Kipsang has said.

Kipsang clarified that Matiang'i meant parents should always demand receipts for all payments they make to schools through M-Pesa.

"The CS meant public schools are required, under the school fees guidelines the ministry has issued, to provide receipts against all payments they receive," he said.

He noted in a statement on Saturday that this includes payments from the government under the free primary and free day secondary education programmes.

The Cabinet Secretary said this system makes it easy for schools and parents to track payments and ensure accountability and accounting accuracy.

He spoke at Ogande Girls Secondary School in Homa Bay town on Friday.

Matiang'i cautioned schools in February against demands for audit reports saying "conmen" claiming to be from the Education ministry had obtained principals' phone numbers and had been calling them.

He has also made impromptu visits to schools to check how operations were being undertaken with regard to schools fees guidelines.
