KENYA: M-PESA and PayPal Unveil Strategic Integration to Power Cross-Border Payments

Safaricom’s M-PESA and PayPal have announced a landmark partnership enabling seamless fund transfers between their platforms, connecting over 35 million Kenyan users and 2 million businesses to PayPal’s global payment ecosystem.
The integration allows instant money transfers between M-PESA and PayPal wallets, significantly boosting access to over 200 international markets. The service, now live in Kenya, is set to roll out in other M-PESA-powered countries.
M-PESA, Africa’s largest mobile money platform, processes more than $1.1 billion daily and serves 50 million users. The partnership builds on M-PESA’s long-standing commitment to financial inclusion. PayPal, with 400 million active users globally, brings deep international reach and secure transaction infrastructure to the alliance.
This move marks a significant step in accelerating fintech interoperability across borders—empowering micro-traders, freelancers, and SMEs to participate in global commerce. Safaricom, a leader in East African telecoms with KES 388 billion in annual revenue, continues aligning its innovations with its 2050 net-zero emissions and digital equity goals.
