THE Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has commended continued technological growth in the country's mobile phone industry.
TCRA Managing Director, Prof. John Nkoma, said in Dar es Salaam: "This growth has so far done a great job in improving Tanzania's economy, as well as social development."
Prof. Nkoma was speaking at an event that saw Vodacom Tanzania enter into a business partnership with the Umoja Switch.
Through this partnership, Vodacom Tanzania customers can now withdraw cash from Umoja Switch ATMs using Vodacom's M-Pesa service.
"We are happy to see this partnership taking off in this market. This is one of the sectors where we give licences for companies to operate.
Being an infrastructure, we believe that this will go a long way in serving Tanzanians with ease," he said.
Vodacom Tanzania Head of Brand and Communications, Mr Kelvin Twissa, noted that, "M-Pesa has today moved a notch higher. Our customers can now access their cash using Umoja Switch ATMs.
This is a great move for all of us and we shall continue to bring more services and products into the market."
Mr Twissa added that "M-Pesa continues to adopt technological developments that are geared to serve customers better."
Established in 2006, Umoja Switch is a local banking network for transaction services. The service has more than 200 ATMs across the country, and by 2012, it has entered into partnership with 24 banks.
