UGANDA:Barclays, Jumia partner on card payment sales
Barclays bank and online retailer Jumia have signed a deal that will enable people purchasing items from the latter’s store pay using cards.
The deal named ‘Card-on-Delivery payment option’ applies to customers in Kampala.
“Jumia customers within Kampala can now order items ranging from electronics and appliances, to fashion and food – and pay using their VISA, MasterCard, American Express or Maestro card at the point of delivery,” said a press statement from Barclays.
Jumia’s riders and third-party delivery agents carry a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, where cardholders can swipe payments.
According to Barclays, this is an effort to heighten the convenience of shopping online and to increase card usage, amongst Ugandans.
Online shoppers had been limited to paying cash-on-delivery or through mobile money.
Jumia marketing manager Stacey Mwesezi said: “Ugandans have already embraced mobile money. Card payments continue to grow; so, it is only right that Jumia make both payment options readily available.”
Gunilla Ouko, the Barclays head of customer network, said: “ The partnership with Jumia is evidence of our ambition to deploy safe electronic solutions to the benefit of the entire country.”
