Tanzanian mobile network firm pays out $11m to users

One of the leading mobile phone operators in Tanzania, Tigo has shared its profit to the tune of Tsh20.6 billion ($11.30 million) in total to its customers writes LEONARD MAGOMBA.

The total pay comes following the latest quarterly (ending 31 December 2014) payment of Tsh3.1 billion ($1.80 million) to Tigo Pesa users.

Tigo Interim General Manager, Cecile Tiano told East African Business Week in Dar es Salaam last week this is another big payment to be made by the company to its customers. It is the only network involved in such a scheme.

The mobile phone company has been paid in a series of quarterly Tigo Pesa profit share distribution to its customers.

It has paid Tsh3.2 billion ($1.76 million) three months ago and another Tsh14.25 billion ($7.60 million) in July last year when the Tigo Pesa profit share distribution scheme was launched, taking the total Tigo Pesa profit share distributed to its users to Tsh20.6 billion ($11.30 million) to date.

“We are very excited once again to be announcing this profit distribution to our Tigo Pesa users. This payment underlines our commitment to improving the welfare of our customers and the country at large,” Tiano said.

She explained that the quarterly payment will be paid to all Tigo Pesa service users including super agents, retail agents and individual customers.

“We believe that this fourth quarter Tigo Pesa profit share distribution that was effected on January 15 will be a welcome relief to millions of Tigo Pesa users as it will assist many in meeting their financial commitments in one of the financially challenging months for many especially due to school fees and year end festivities,” she said.

The Interim General Manager explained that, as before, the average return to a customer will vary based on their average daily balance in their Tigo Pesa e-wallet.

This applies to super-agents, retail agents and individual customers.
