Tanzania: Trade union unveils mobile money transfer platform

 Tanzania’s money transfer sector has received a boost, following the introduction of the latest money transfer platform.

The platform, by the name Dau-Pesa, was launched today by the Informal Sector Worker Union, and will enable Tanzanians to make payments for various services such as Luku, Dawasco, DSTV, and Zuku.

Speaking while making the announcement in Dar es Salaam, Dr Dauda Salmin, the Director for Dau-Pesa, noted that the platform has been designed to work in three ways.

“Customers can make Dau-Pesa transactions using their phones, said Dr. Salmin, adding that, “Those using Vodacom, Tigo, Airtel, and Zantel networks are legible to use this service.” To make Dau-Pesa transactions on the phone, customers are urged to dial *150*47# and follow instructions.

Dr Salmin went on to say that Dau-Pesa also can be used through Point of Sale (POS) machines. “These are machines that have been connected to various banks to make transactions. In this case, we have collaborated with Tanzania Women’s Bank and Covenant Bank. Customers can now deposit or withdraw from either of these banks through POS machines.”

The third way is Dau-Pesa card. According to Ibrahim, Dau-Pesa customers will be issued with a card that will enable them pay bills by visiting their bank.

“Dau-Pesa is a technological service that aims at easing the way we make money transactions. We call upon Tanzanians to take it up and make well use of it for their transactions,” he says.

Dau-Pesa is also available in Kenya and Rwanda, and plans to spread to all East African countries in the next 12 months.
