Safaricom told to show payment details for NYS project
Safaricom has one week to provide payment details of the 18,000 youth paid millions of shillings for community service, amid claims of fraud. The National Assembly Public Accounts Committee yesterday asked the mobile phone service provider to audit the list of youth groups and beneficiaries tabled by NYS.
The committee wants to ascertain if indeed payments were made to those listed. Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore told the committee the mobile phone service provider does not have data of the beneficiaries of the youth empowerment project as the money was remitted by National Bank. He said Safaricom only provided the banker with an online account from where money was paid.
Collymore denied Safaricom entered into a business contract with NYS. “We have a mobile banking agreement with NBK, where we provide a paybill number to administer a single payment to multiple recipients,” Collymore said.
