GHANA: Stop charging customers for wallet deposits – Mobile Money Advocacy Group

The  Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Ghana (MoMAG) has expressed deep concerns over the exorbitant charges imposed by  Mobile Money agents on deposits.

The group observed that some agents charge customers for both depositing money into their wallets and cash withdrawals.

MoMAG admonished customers not to pay any fees when depositing money into their mobile wallets, emphasizing that such deposits are free of charge.

The group cautioned that charging customers for deposits is illegal.

In a statement, the group, said, “It has come to the attention of Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Ghana (MoMAG) that some mobile money agents are charging on deposits (Cash-in) made on customers’ wallets and in some cases withdrawal (Cash-out).

“We wish to bring to the notice of the general public, the concerns regarding mobile money deposits on one’s own wallet. Customers are not to pay any money for depositing money in their mobile wallets. Deposits on one’s own mobile money wallet are free of charge. Charging on deposit is deemed illegal.

“The customer ought to go to the Agent’s point/shop with the phone that the deposit will be made to. Without the presence of the phone, the agent will not receive a commission on that transaction.”

Additionally, the group warns customers to refrain from cashing out remotely, as this practice can expose them to further exploitation and unnecessary charges.

“Again, customers should know that Cash-Out is not made remotely but rather in the presence of the Agent. Some customers go to the agent’s point with a different phone and pretend to allow Cash-out, but someone elsewhere will rather allow the cash-out on the blind side of the agent.

‘Such practice will cause the Agent. Remember, Cash-out is also free of charge; customers are not to pay any money for cash-out. Additionally, customers are advised to ensure that they have received a confirmation message, indicating the success of the transaction before leaving the agent’s location.”
