Airtel- Rwanda taps into government’s online payment platform

Airtel Rwanda, the country’s leading telcom by internet innovations and number three by subscriber base is tapping into the government’s online payment system.

Indrajeet Singh Airtel Commercial Director says that the move will help its subscribers to be able to pay for the government services already accessed online as it moves to have all its services accessed online.

Airtel’s innovation towards easy payments will push the boundaries and create limitless possibilities for Rwandans to pay their bills through Airtel Money platform,” he said on Friday.

The government in a move to ease service delivery and usher in a tech lead economy set up an online portal where its services will be provided with six services already activated with other services expected to be hosted.

So far Airtel subscribers will be able to pay for birth certificates, driving test registration fees, trading licenses, as well as trading licenses for value added tax-registered companies using their Airtel Money accounts.

The creation of the portal known as Irembo (gate) has provided a revenue window for the telecoms with the two other telecoms, Tigo and MTN already easing payment for the services.

Moreover, telecoms have already ventured into the cashless economy through easing transactions as well as encouraging savings on their platforms, leaving banks with no option but seek for partnership.

The  payments for these services Singh  says  adds to the Airtel Money’s other provisions that  include utility bills like electricity, water, money transfers, shopping, transport fares and  wallet to  wallet transactions.
